• Art is an outstanding tool for teaching not only developmental skills, but also academic subjects such as math, science, and literacy. The most effective learning takes place when children do something related to the topic they are learning. When children study any given concept, they learn it better and retain it longer if they do an art activity that reinforces that learning. This information has been recognized by teachers since the time of Confucius, when he said: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember; I do and I understand."

Community arts is an emerging field promoting creative artistic practices with groups and communities to express diverse identities and raise awareness about social, political and environmental issues. It democratizes art, emphasizes working together as much as the finished product, and embraces a wide range of activities, including participatory mural production.

    Ursula Neufeld-Mosaic Artist

After 30 years in the field of Early Childhood Education I have incorporated my love of the arts and children to create wonderful mosaics in schools and communities.

To allow for the most creativity I prefer indoor mosaic projects.

Individual projects can be created with entire classrooms.

    I follow the Manitoba Arts

council, ARtist in the schools funding schedule. Schools are responsible for a minimum of 20% of the budget.

You can find my projects on the following funding sites:

     https://winnipegarts.ca/artist-directory

    https://artistsinschools.ca/listings/

    The process

I start with consultation with staff on theme.

Teachers prep students with background of the themes. Specialized supports ...knowledge keepers, elders, scientists, historians, etc. will work with artist and students to ensure accuracy.

Student committees: further theme development and students artists rendering is created.

A day for artists set up...classroom with water access, pails and plastic containers for glue and mortar. School prep tables and floor for the project. Waffle boards, tesserae, stained glass and mosaic tools, mortar, weldbond, grout , safety goggles are brought by Artist.

    For mural:

    Teaching of skills...art and mosaic.

One classroom at a time 8 students at a time...measure, trim tesserae and apply into images.

One class of about 28 students will be assigned a full day and a half and so forth.

    ARtist grouts the project.

The school is responsible for installation unless the mosaic is applied directly to a wall.

    Individual projects:

Theme development, drawing of templates, teaching of skills and then creation of projects. Depending on the project: grouting/resin may be applied.

    Architects/Corporations

Each project is discussed with the lead designers. Professional fees apply.
